Dr. Binita Behera

Assistant Professor

Dr. Binita Behera is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at KIIT School of Law, with 22 years of experience in teaching, research, and as a practitioner in the field of development. She holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil. from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. At KIIT, she teaches interdisciplinary courses across multiple schools and serves as Convenor of the University Students’ Counseling Committee. Her research focuses on gender, environmental justice, indigenous rights, and digital activism, with numerous national and international publications. She is a co-inventor of a design patent on an inmate justice monitoring device. Prior to joining KIIT, she worked with UNICEF, ICAR, and several NGOs. Passionate about student mentoring and social action, Dr. Behera integrates academic knowledge with grassroots experience, making her a valuable contributor to teaching, institutional development, and community engagement.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

She holds a Ph.D and M.Phil. in Sociology from the prestigious Centre for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

COURSE EXPERTISE

Dr. Behera has taught across multiple schools including Law, Rural Management, Applied Sciences, and the School of Languages and Literature. She handles core Sociology courses as well as specialized law papers such as Law and Social Tranformation and Religion, Diversity and the Law

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Her research spans themes such as IPR and Law, Prisoners’ Issues, environmental justice, gender studies, indigenous rights, digital activism, science and technology and public policy.

Administrative Responsibilities

She has taken on significant administrative responsibilities, including serving as Convenor of the University Students’ Counseling Committee, Head of the Mentor Counselling Committee at the School of Law, Member of and Faculty Convenor of the Centre for Social Action and Literary Society, Member of Disciplinary Committee of School of Law and Superintendant of Girls’ Hostel, School of Law.

Awards and Achievements

Notably, she is a co-inventor of a granted design patent for an “Inmate Justice Monitoring Device.
Apart from this, she got 1st position at college level in +2 Arts in Sailabala Women’s College. She got 7th position in the University in Sociology at Utkal University.
